The European Commission, in cooperation with several partners, has today developed a European data platform on Covid-19, to enable rapid collection and sharing of available research data. The platform, which is an integral part of the ERAvsCorona action plan, is another important result of the EU’s commitment to support researchers, in Europe and around the world, in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
The platform will provide a reliable and scalable international within which researchers can store and share data sets, such as DNA sequences, protein structures, preclinical research and clinical trial data, as well as epidemiological data.
The rapid and open sharing of data aims to research and discoveries and to react effectively to the emergency of the coronavirus. The European data platform on Covid-19 is consistent with the principles set out in the declaration on data sharing in a public health emergency and represents a further step in the Commission’s commitment to open data research and the promotion of open science,with the aim of making science more efficient, reliable and capable of responding to social challenges. n this context, the platform also represents a priority pilot project that aims to achieve the objectives of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), also making use of the existing networks between EMBL-EBI and the data infrastructures of public health systems.
